The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Saturday removed a cross located here in Bandra following the Bombay High Court's order to demolish illegal shrines or religious structures within its jurisdiction.

This symbol of Christianity, installed over 100 years ago, was removed on the premise of being illegally constructed.

Earlier, the Bombay High Court ordered the BMC to demolish all illegal shrines or religious structures and installations within its jurisdiction.

In Bandra West, the BMC had identified 38 such structures, including 32 temples and 6 crosses.

Local residents and members of various Catholic organisations opposed the demolition, while dismissing claims of it being illegally constructed.

"This is a legal structure but even then it was demolished. We are trying for a writ petition. The police is not accepting an FIR," a local resident told ANI.
