The Mumbai Police on Sunday confirmed that the death toll in the spurious liquor case has risen to 94, with a further 35 people hospitalised for consuming the hooch.
"Till now, 94 people have been killed in this tragedy. Around 35 are still undergoing treatment in the hospital. Many teams have been sent to investigate the matter, to learn where the alcohol came from... preliminary reports suggest that it was coming from the Vashi and Kalyan areas of the city," Additional Commissioner of Police F. Patil told ANI.
"We are going to every street and trying to make people aware of the issue. We have taken into custody under preventive measures around 25-30 people who had indulged in selling spurious liquor," he added.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis had ordered an enquiry into the matter soon after the case came to light.
Reportedly, eight police officials have been suspended for 'negligent approach while discharging their duty' for not being able to check the production of spurious liquor and the case is being looked into by the crime branch.
