Mumbai Police Commissioner Satyapal Singh has resigned from service and is said to be prepping to contest the general elections.

The 1980-batch IPS officer, who was due to retire next year, is reportedly considering contesting the upcoming Lok Sabha polls either from Mumbai or Uttar Pradesh, his native state.

"So far I worked for a limited jurisdiction, for Mumbai Police, for Mumbai city. Now I would like to expand my area of operation and I would like to devote my time and my energy for social harmony, national reconstruction and world peace," Singh said.

"I want to do something for the nation. I have not decided to join any party. You will get to know about this in a few days' time," he added.

Singh has received several police awards, including a special service medal for extraordinary work in the Naxal-hit areas of Andhra Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh.
