India amassed a massive 311 runs for the loss of four wickets at the draw of stumps on the first day of the second Test in Brisbane against Australia, thanks to opener Murali Vijay's splendid ton.
Vijay had a splendid knock of 144 runs that included 22 boundaries off 213 deliveries, before he fell prey to off-break spinner Nathan Lyon's delivery.
Vijay had come down the track to go for the big hit again and was trying to make room to go over mid-off. However, Lyon's delivery went with the angle past his outside edge and wicketkeeper Brad Haddin caught the batsman behind with ease.
Young Australian paceman Josh Hazlewood claimed two wickets on the first day.
Hazlewood's first victim was Cheteshwar Pujara. However, it was a poor decision from the umpire and caused much outbreak on Twitter from fans in cricket-loving India, with Australian skipper Michael Clarke also siding with the tourists.
India failed to make use of the Decision Review System (DRS) and Pujara had to leave the crease having scored just 18 runs. Pujara swayed away from Hazlewood's deliver and his hands went up to shield his face as the ball came in off the pitch.
The ball popped to the keeper, and the umpire immediately gave it out, although the ball had hit the batsman's helmet and not the gloves as the umpire thought.
It was Hazlewood's first Test wicket. The paceman's second came as launched a delivery to star Indian batsman Virat Kohli.
The ball was short outside off, not wide enough to cut, but Kohli went for it and the extra bounce caused him to edge it thickly to the keeper Haddin. Kohli went off the pitch having contributed 19 runs to the scoreline.
Opener Shikhar Dhawan was the first wicket to fall for the Indian team. He fell prey to a short and wide delivery from pacer Mitchell Marsh, who grabbed his first Test wicket.
Dhawan went after the short and wide delivery, looking for the slash away from his body, and the slight extra bounce on the ball caught the opener's bat's his top edge that saw the ball going through to keeper Haddin. Dhawan hit 19 runs before he walked off the pitch.
At the draw of stumps, Ajinkya Rahane and Rohit Sharma remained unbeaten on their individual scores of 75 and 26 respectively. They will resume batting for the tourists on Thursday to add to India's score.
