Defending US Open champion Andy Murray has reportedly backed the bid of squash to be included in the number of Olympic sports in 2020 given that he had played squash as a youth before becoming a tennis star.
According to Sport24, Olympic officials will consider squash, a combined baseball/softball bid and wrestling for the 2020 Summer Games on Sunday at an International Olympic Committee (IOC) meeting, and the site will also be chosen at the same meeting.
Stating that he will be cheering on squash to get approval at the meeting, the Scot, who advanced into the quarter-finals of the US Open, said that he supports growth in racquet sports for future Olympic Games, although he feels that squash is not broadcasted much as it seems like the same point is getting played.
According to Murray, squash is a tough sport and is very challenging physically, adding that he used to play squash at his local sports club when he was young.
Although squash's poor TV ratings might not be the biggest help to its case given the importance of television rights fees revenue to the Olympic organisers, the report added that it might be a dream come true for its athletes if the sport is included in the Olympic line-up.
Murray also said that a squash player has to be extremely fit, have very good hand-eye coordination, good feel, and good touch.
