World number three Andy Murray progressed through to the third round of the Rogers Cup after battling past Tommy Roberto in straight sets in Montreal.

Murray took two days to claim a convincing 6-4, 7-5 win over his Spanish opponent after the contest was washed off at 4-4 on Tuesday, the BBC reported.

The 28-year-old will next face Gilles Muller for a quarter-final berth and has the opportunity to replace Roger Federer as number two in the world rankings should he reaches the final.
