Although most states will celebrate the feast of sacrifice on Friday, conventionally, regions like Kerala, Mangalore and few others mark the festival a day before.

In Thiruvananthapuram, both young and old ushered in the festivities by greeting each other and spreading the message of brotherhood.

"We always believe that this day is a celebration for brotherhood, friendship, communal harmony and peace. Islam is a religion which stands for peace and harmony of all religion and well being of all the communities," said a resident.

Meanwhile, Muslims in Kashmir thronged markets a day ahead of Eid celebrations in the valley on Friday.

"I got around 1200 sheep for sale before the Eid. Most of them are sold out. I am only left with 350 sheep now," said a cattle trader, Haaji Kamaal Hasan.

People shopped for clothes, dry fruits, fruits and other necessities.

"People come from far off places to buy items. Business thrives during the month. This is a huge market where people from various cities come to shop," said a resident, Shoubat.

Bakra-Eid or Eid-ul-Zuha is one of the most celebrated festivals among Muslims all over the world. The festival is a day to commemorate the Prophet Abraham's willingness to sacrifice his son Ismail on God's command.
