Rafael Nadal kicked off his hard-court campaign with a straight-set win over Sergiy Stakhovsky to reach third round of the Rogers Cup in Montreal.
Seventh seed Nadal overcame his Ukrainian opponent 7-6 (4), 6-3 in a contest that lasted one hour and 25 minutes.
The 14-time Grand Slam champion will next face Mikhail Youzhny of Russia for a quarter-final berth.
