The 14-time Grand Slam champion produced a perfect blend of power and precision as he subdued Cuevas 6-3, 6-2 in a contest that lasted an hour and 12 minutes.
Nadal will next face Andreas Seppi of Italy, who reached the last four without having to play. His opponent, Simone Bolleli pulled out of the tournament due to a stomach ailment.
The former world number one, who has been struggling with form lately, has slumped to 10th in the rankings.
