Nagaland lynching result of 'public fury': Shiv Sena

Justifying the lynching of a rape accused in Nagaland's capital Dimapur, the Shiv Sena has described the incident as a result of 'public fury'.

In an article in its mouthpiece 'Saamna', the party reportedly said what should have happened in Delhi over the Nirbhaya incident has happened in Nagaland.

Police have arrested 18 people till now in connection with the case, while the curfew has been relaxed to allow people to buy essential commodities.

An angry crowd broke into a high-security prison in Dimapur anddragged out 35-year-old Syed Farid Khan, a suspected illegal Bangladeshi migrant, thrashed him to death after paraded him naked last week.

 

Khan, a second hand car dealer, was accused of raping a 20-year-old Naga woman last month. Police arrested Khan on February 25 and he was sent to jail by a lower court.

Inspector general of police, Wabang Jamir, said situation was tense but under control.

The Army was placed on standby in both Nagaland and Assam. The Nagaland Government has also sought the assistance of paramilitary forces to restore normalcy in the region.
