ANI New Delhi, [India]

The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) on Friday asked Prime Minister Narendra Modi to formally apologise for his "raincoat" comment on his predecessor Dr. Manmohan Singh.

It may be recalled that Prime Minister Modi while replying to President Pranab Mukherjee's address to Parliament on Wednesday in the Rajya Sabha, had said "Only Dr. Manmohan Singh Saheb knows the art of taking a bath wearing a raincoat."

This comment was made to highlight the clean image of Dr. Singh in the midst of several scams allegedly committed by his Congress Party.

Modi's comment rankled opposition Congress party and led to an adjourning of the Budget Session till March 9.

"Making such comments in the House of Parliament on a person like Dr. Manmohan Singh, who is absolutely clean and above any corruption activities doesn't really befit the position of PM", said NCP leader Majeed Memon.

"We have lot of sympathy for Dr. Singh, and, I think, the PM should withdraw his words which might normalise the situation, or else, this may continue to have a long impact."

The Congress has demanded an apology from Prime Minister Modi for his remarks, and threatened to boycott him for rest of the session.
