Need to rebuild Congress, says Priya Dutt

In tune with her earlier assertion that the Congress is suffering from an "auto immune disease", former MP Priya Dutt on Thursday said that a strong decision must be taken for rebuilding the party and reorganizing the structure.

She, however, told ANI that her remark was not aimed at insulting the party.

"When I spoke about autoimmune disease, it is a disease which kills your own body cells. So, that is something that I have seen happening in the Congress for a very long time. Internally we fight so much that we lose focus in the larger picture of the party. Many people in the party work for themselves and not for the party, we need to recognize that," she said.

"And I am speaking that very openly today because I have gone through that for last 10 years. I have seen it in every election. I think a very strong decision and stand must be taken for rebuilding this party and reorganizing the structure," she added.

In the backdrop of assembly results in five states, Dutt said it is very immature to blame party vice-president Rahul Gandhi for the electoral defeat.

"He has campaigned because he is the vice-president and it is his responsibility. If the state is weak, how can Rahul Gandhi help," she added.

Asserting that there are several bright faces in the Congress, Dutt said, "You talk about Jyotiraditya Scindia, you talk about Sachin Pilot, Jitendra Prasad, Milind Deora, RPN Singh there are many faces. These are all bright vibrant people, they need to be projected. We need to make our strength in the states."

"We depend that Rahul Gandhi will come and campaign and we will win. It doesn't work in that manner. People want to know who will be their CM, who will lead them in the state. The biggest example was Amarinder Singh, he was the face, he was their leader people looked at him and voted," she added.

Dutt yesterday said the Congress suffers from an "auto immune disease" and that everyone within it should try to rebuild the organisation.

"Cong has shown repeatedly that it suffers from an autoimmune disease... Cong destroys Cong... We need to be treated from within to be healthy again," she tweeted.
