Former South African President Nelson Mandela's children's remains, which were moved by his grandson to Mvezo in 2011, will undergo forensic tests before being shifted back to Qunu for reburial.

News24 reports that the graves are of Mandela's eldest son Madiba Thembekile, first daughter Makaziwe Mandela and .Mandla's father Makgatho Mandela

The Eastern Cape High Court ordered Mandla to return the remains to Qunu on Friday.

Lieutenant Colonel Mzukisi Fatyela said that the bodies will remain at a mortuary in Mthatha, and taken for forensic testing on Thursday.

Eastern Cape police said the remains would only then be taken to Qunu for reburial.

A family member said that Mandla had refused to answer why he had moved the graves without consulting the family and stormed out of a meeting in Qunu last week when he was ordered to return them.

Mandla challenged the ruling of the high court claiming that Mvezo, where he was building a multi-million tourist hotel, was the birthplace of the Mandelas and held historic significance.

Meanwhile, Judge Lusindiso Pakade found that Mandla's actions were scandalous and vicious. Later he ordered the sheriff of the court to exhume the graves in Mvezo and move them to the family farm in Qunu.
