Anti-apartheid hero Nelson Mandela is responding to treatment but remains in a critical condition, President Jacob Zuma said.

Zuma's statement urged the public to continue providing support to Mandela and showering him with love.

King Buyelekhaya Dalindyebo, the head of Mandela's Thembu tribe, on visiting him in Pretoria hospital said that he was doing all he can to give him peace of mind over his family feud.

BBC reports that Mandela family's battle for control of his legacy has escalated since he has been hospitalised.

Earlier, his grandson Mandla lost a court case against rival family members over the burial site of three of Mandela's children.

According to the report, Mandla may now face criminal charges for alleged grave tampering.

Meanwhile, South Africans are preparing to celebrate Mandela's 95th birthday on 18 July.
