Over 60 people have been killed, with thousands injured, as a fresh earthquake measuring 7.3 on the Richter scale struck Nepal.

The quake, which hit the Himalayan nation on Tuesday afternoon, came a fortnight after a 7.9 magnitude earthquake had claimed over 7,000 lives and had devastated the country.

The deputy team leader of the Norwegian Red Cross team, Ranveig Tveitnesl, who was still in the country following the first earthquake, said that her unit was helping the casualties and givingthem medical attention.

"We were here when this earthquake came. We have had a lot of casualties, two dead on arrival to the hospital. The last count I heard was 40 injured but that is several hours ago so the number is much higher now and it will continue to rise throughout the night and tomorrow," she said.

Meanwhile, Nepalese military officer Shews Basnet said that children were in shock due to the quake and assured that the forces were helping to keep people calm.

Tuesday's earthquake was followed by a number of aftershocks, including one that measured 5.6 on the Richter scale.
