The Nepal government on Monday nominated former chief election commissioner of the Nepal Election Commission Nilkantha Upreti as the new ambassador to India.

The cabinet of the KP Sharma Oli-led Left government held a meeting today in which Upreti's name was referred as the ambassador to India. Nepal's Foreign Minister Pradeep Kumar Gyawali made the announcement after the cabinet meeting.

As per the process, Upreti's name will now be sent to a Parliamentary committee which will in turn send it to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA). The Nepal's MFA will then send it to its Indian counterpart, Ministry of External Affairs for an agreemo. Once approved and agreemo signed, MFA will send Upreti's name to the President of Nepal for the presidential order.

Since last year, the post of the envoy to India has remained vacant following then ambassador Deep Kumar Upadhyay resignation to contest the parliamentary elections on a Nepali Congress ticket.

The Cabinet meeting also recommended the name of Nepal's ambassador for Malaysia.
