The Congress party on Tuesday demanded that the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led NDA government order the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) to scrap the regulatory framework paper under the Section 25 TRAI Act.

"Under the Section 25 of TRAI Act, which states that the government can give direct orders to TRAI in public interest, the Government of India should give direct orders to TRAI to scrap this regulatory framework paper," Congress leader Ajay Maken told the media.

"We want the government to take serious steps regarding net neutrality. This is a very important issue which will create problems in the future," he added, asserting that the Congress is in support of net neutrality.

Meanwhile, former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Omar Abdullah said that he is expects the Centre to take some concrete action in support of net neutrality.

"And lastly before I call it a day this is my tweet in support of #NetNeutrality. I hope we hear something concrete from the govt soon," he posted on twitter.

Net neutrality is a principle whereby internet service providers and governments are expected to treat all internet websites and services as equal, without discriminating or charging differential tariff based on users, content, websites, services or mode of communication.

Amidst the debate on net neutrality, Union Minister for Communications and Information Technology Ravi Shankar Prasad had earlier said that a six-member panel has been constituted and will submit its recommendations regarding the same by early next month.

At present, India has no laws with respect to net neutrality.
