Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's Likud party is on road to claim victory in Israel's elections.

With most votes counted, Netanyahu's Likud party has claimed about 29 seats in the 120-seat parliament, the Knesset, while the centre-left Zionist Union has secured 24 seats, reported the BBC.

Exit polls had earlier suggested a dead heat between the two.

If Likud party continues to lead, Israel will be governed by another right-wing coalition led by Netanyahu.

After the polls closed, Netanyahu said he had already spoken to the leaders of other right-of-centre parties about forming a new government.

While addressing his jubilant supporters in Tel Aviv, Netanyahu hailed Tuesday's vote as a "great victory" for Likud, which had lagged behind the Zionist Union in opinion polls in the run-up to the election.

Netanyahu said that the victory was achieved "against all odds.
