New York cop dies after being shot by gunman

A police officer in New York has died after he was shot while chasing a gunman in East Harlem, authorities here said.

According to The New York Times, Commissioner William J. Bratton said at a news conference that Officer Randolph Holder, 33, a Guyanese immigrant, was shot during an exchange of gunfire on the footpath of Franklin D. Roosevelt Drive near 120th Street.

The police officer was responding to an armed robbery in a park, according to officials.

Holder was taken to Harlem Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries few hours later, the police said.

The gunman was shot in the leg and taken to NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center, and is expected to be released into police custody later.
