Newcastle winger Jonas Gutierrez has revealed that he has been diagnosed with testicular cancer and is currently undergoing chemotherapy to battle the illness.
According to the Mirror, Gutierrez is a fans' favourite on Tyneside, but was loaned out to Norwich last season, and was deluged with good luck messages from fans when he broke the news on Argentine TV on Tuesday night.
Speaking of his ailment, Gutierrez said that he went home crying after it was confirmed that he was suffering from cancer.
Gutierrez, who played at the 2010 World Cup, said that after finding out about the tumour in a testicle, he went back to Argentina and assumed the costs, despite having a contract with Newcastle.
He shared that this was the 'most difficult game' he had to play and that chemotherapy resulted in loss of his trademark long hair, which he wanted to hold onto.
Gutierrez had been secretive about his illness for months before he finally decided to open up.
He said that fighting cancer makes the rest of the problems insignificant, adding that he decided to tell his story because maybe it would help people who have cancer.
