ANI New Delhi, [India]

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) on Thursday has issued notices to the Delhi Government and the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) to come up with a solution to end the menace of solid waste.

It asked both to submit a detailed report over the budget allocated by government as salary for sanitation workers by Friday.

The NGT also questioned the capability of the government to deal with the issue and asked what can and should be done to boost sanitation services in Delhi so that a collapse of the garbage management mechanism can be avoided in the future.

It expressed concern about the lack of infrastructure and appropriate technical capacity to handle such a huge quantity of waste. The capital city generates nearly 14, 100 metric tonnes of municipal solid waste a day.

The national capital has been reeling under a garbage menace with sanitation workers calling for an indefinite strike since January 5 over pending salaries of three months.

The NGT had earlier directed all municipal authorities to draw up "an integrated waste management plan for Delhi, identify landfill sites and improve condition of existing sites," among other issues.
