NHRC serves notice to Kerala Govt. over labelling activists as 'Maoists'

The National Human Rights Council has served a notice to the Kerala government after media reports stated that human rights activists in the state were being labelled as 'Maoist sympathisers'.

A press release by the NHRC said that if the reports raise a 'serious issue' of the violation of the human rights of the activists in question, and has directed Kerala Director General of Police to reply to the same within a period of two weeks.

As per reports, human rights defenders and advocates Tushar Nirmal Sarathy and Jaison C. Cooper had been arrested by the state police under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act in January.
