A young man convicted of committing homosexual offences was whipped 20 times in a northern Nigerian Sharia court.
The judge awarded the punishment to Mubarak Ibrahim, 20, for sexual the acts he carried out seven years ago.
According to the BBC, the punishment was given to Ibrahim despite President Goodluck Jonathan signed into law a bill which bans same-sex marriages, gay groups and shows of same-sex public affection.
Along with Ibrahim, 11 other Muslims and a Christian man were arrested last month accused of being homosexuals.
Ibrahim said he was relieved that Judge Nuhu Muhammad had been lenient on him and had not sentenced him to death.
