Night shelters: SC summons Urban Development Secretary

Dissatisfied with the Centre's affidavit on night shelters, the Supreme Court on Friday summoned Secretary of the Union Urban Development Ministry.

The Urban Development Ministry had in the affidavit divulged the details of measures taken by the Union Government to provide shelter to homeless people in the night during winter.

The government had filed the affidavit on November 27. Dissatisfied with the government's reply, a social justice bench of Justices M.B. Lokur and U.U. Lalit summoned Urban Development Secretary Madhusudan Prasad on January 8.

The bench asked the Centre to convene a meeting with state secretaries on utilisation of funds for night shelters. Last year, the apex court had directed the states to set up night shelters before severe cold conditions develop.

The apex court has posted the matter for hearing on January 8, when the Urban Development Secretary will divulge the details about the utilisation of funds to create night shelters.

However, with the temperature dipping, the homeless people are facing a tough time battling cold conditions in the absence of sufficient night shelters.
