The Green Highways (Plantation, Transportation, Beautification and Maintenance) Policy, 2015 will be launched by the Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari at a National Conference here on Tuesday. Under it, transplantation of trees will be promoted along the Highways wherever it is technically feasible.
The policy will make it mandatory for road developers to set aside one per cent of the total project cost for plantation, a scheme that is likely to see Rs. 1,000 crore under the green corpus this fiscal.
The policy provides a comprehensive guideline to ensure uniformity of operations to enhancement of highways landscapes. An official release said that the policy will help generate employments to the community and the local groups will get right to the non-timber produce from the trees.
At the National Conference over 1,000 delegates from all over India will participate and deliberate upon various issues related to the development of Green Highways in the country.
