Chief Medical Officer (CMO) of Ambala, Vinod Gupta on Tuesday said that the society involved in the blinding of 15 persons had no mandatory clearance from the government before conducting the surgery camp and without the permission of civil surgeon's office.

"The society had no mandatory clearance from us to hold the camp. They had applied for permission in 2013, but it was denied by us as we first wanted to conduct an inspection of the hospital and get details of the surgeons who will conduct operations. These surgeries were conducted without the permission of civil surgeon's office. Inquiry will be conducted as soon as we get official direction from the administration," said Gupta.

Gupta highlighted that the kind of procedure adopted by the camp is a criminal activity.

Meanwhile, one of the victim's family member said that the doctor is not taking any responsibility for this.

"They told us it was just an infection, whereas everyone was almost blinded. They took money for us for the operation also. The doctor is not taking responsibility either."

"We realized that they were blinded a day after the surgery when the bandages around their eyes were opened. There was a panic in the camp when many complained of similar issues, following which they were rushed to PGI Chandigarh," said another family member of a victim.

The fifteen have reportedly suffered vision loss after a botched cataract surgery at a health camp organised at a charitable hospital in Ambala district of Haryana.

The surgery to cure cataract was reportedly performed on November 24.
