Guwahati recently hosted a National Jute Fair organised by the National Jute Board with an aim to promote jute products.

All together, 20 stalls showcased a variety of products such as ornaments, bags and decorative items.

Assam produces a large quantity of high quality jute.

With demand growing for jute products, many self-help groups in the region are now engaged in the production of such items.

The jute board also provides training to such groups in various parts of the state.

Nubanu Begum, a self help group member, said: "The central government had given us training, and they have also provided financial help through loans. They gave us advanced training and teach us properly so that we can earn a living. Such products are in demand so it's really helpful for us."

The 24th Tripura Industries and Commerce Fair held at the Agartala International Fair ground recently gave the locals a chance to sample a variety of bamboo and cane products, jewelry, home appliances, traditional outfits and varieties of artificial flowers.

Artisans and traders from Delhi, Kashmir and neighbouring Bangladesh also took part in the fair.

The participants were happy with the enthusiastic response of the customers.

Mohammad Shreyaj, a participant from Kashmir, said: "I have been participating in this fair for the last five to six years and never faced any problem or fear. I have participated with traditional Kashmiri items and the sale is quite good.

The organizing of such fairs on a regular basis provides a platform to the artisans and small entrepreneurs who have taken up self-employment ventures, to exhibit their products.

Moreover, such events create awareness about the abundant resources and helps in attracting investors to the region.
