A report has said that the last two Americans who were being detained in North Korea, Matthew Todd Miller and Kenneth Bae, have been released and are on their way home.

The United States confirmed the news and said that the Director of National Intelligence, James Clapper, is accompanying the men back, reported the BBC.

Another American citizen, Jeffrey Fowle, was freed by North Korea last month.

While expressing gratitude for the prisoners' safe return, U.S. President Barack Obama remarked that it was "a wonderful day" for the men and their families.

The United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said that he appreciated North Korea's decision to release the men and was relieved they were returning home.

Retired American professional basketball player, Dennis Rodman, said that he played a vital role in Bae's return as he wrote a letter begging North Korean leader Kim Jong Un to release him. He said that he was happy Bae is coming back "safely.
