Northeast girl wins gold in International sporting event held in Bahrain

Madhusmita Baruah, a 22-year old student from Assam, has recently won a gold medal at the 3rd International Strength Lifting and Incline Benchpress Championship held at Manama in Bahrain.

Madhusmita, who is a farmer's daughter from Chungi Lahing Village in Jorhat, is a source of inspiration for many in the region.

Hailing from a poor family, Madhusmita was helped by the financial support from Nakachari Sports Association, village authority, Jorhat Power lifting Association and local people.

Madhusmita said that she is happy to have made India and Assam proud at the international level.

"I am very happy. I am happy that I have brought laurel for Assam and India at international level and also made my college proud," she said.

 

Meanwhile, Madhusmita's father Ganeshyam Baruah said that his daughter was interested in sports since her childhood.

"I am very happy for her. She showed enthusiasm towards sports since childhood," he said.

Madhusmita was recently felicitated by Jorhat College student union for her achievement and declared her as 'Mary Kom of Jorhatian'. Her ultimate dream is to represent India in Olympic Games and bring laurels for the country.

"I feel proud and happy to learn that one of our students Madhusmita has won a laurel at international level. She has been able to bag the gold medal recently in Dubai. We have already proclaimed her to be our Mary Kom," said Principal of the Jorhat College, Devabrata Sharma.

In 2014, Madhusmita had won a gold medal in 21st all India strength lifting and incline bench press championship held at West Bengal. In the same year, she also won a silver medal at a National level event held in West Bengal and a gold medal in Inter-College weight lifting championship held in Assam.

Now, Madhusmita is practicing hard for the upcoming International championship to be held at Tokyo in Japan this year. To fulfill her dreams, Madhusmita has appealed the state and central government to support her so that she can compete in upcoming international tournaments and bring laurels for the country.
