Scientists have developed a new transparent layer of electrode that could make smartphone's display shatterproof.

The researchers recently demonstrated that a transparent layer of electrodes on a polymer surface could be extremely tough and flexible, withstanding repeated scotch tape peeling and bending tests.

Yu Zhu, UA assistant professor of polymer science, claimed that this could revolutionize and replace conventional touchscreens because it contains two pronounced factors novel and cost-effective that drives the need to substitute current existing coatings.

The annoying problem of cracked smartphone screens might be solved once and for all with this flexible touchscreen, he added.

The study is published in the American Chemical Society's journal ACS Nano in the article titled 'A Tough and High-Performance Transparent Electrode from a Scalable and Transfer-Free Method'.
