Researchers are reportedly working on a technology that will allow people to share scents with their friends through a device called the "oPhone".

The technology is being developed by Harvard researcher David Edwards and a team of his students, which after its completion will allow users to send scents through text message, phone call or social media application via a Bluetooth-capable smartphone, tablet or computer.

The Harvard researcher said that the oPhone, which links to a smartphone or other device via Bluetooth, was in development and it will be available for use notably in Cambridge, Massachusetts, from July and commercially from later this year, Fox News reported.

Edward further explained that the oChip is like the ink cartridge of the oPhone, adding that it contains the basic aromatic material that gets mixed to produce hundreds of unique aromas per oPhone.

Meanwhile, the cost of the phone is yet to be determined.
