The English Premier League will have no sponsors from the 2016/17 season onward, suggesting that it wants to emulate major American sports leagues like the NBA and NFL in presenting and projecting a 'clean' brand image.

The league, which has been sponsored by Barclays since 2004, will simply be known as 'The Premier League'.

A Premier League spokesperson said that Barclays had been an excellent partner for the league throughout their sponsorship of the competition and they were looking forward to work with them in 2015/16, the final season of their title sponsorship, Sport24 reported.

The league sources have stressed that their new sponsorship strategy will not impinge on their clubs' ability to pursue their own individual commercial models.

The league didn't had a sponsor in its inaugural 1991/92 season before signing a four-year deal with brewers Carling.
