ANI Washington DC

Hawaii has become the very first state of US to push the authorised smoking age from 18 to 21 with effect of which purchase and use of digital cigarettes will also be banned for individuals under the age of 21 from January 1, 2016.

Governoe of Hawaii David Ige signed the bill of raising the minimum smoking age in the state, on June 19, Fox News reported.

All the anti-tobacco promoters of other states of US are weighing following suit that whether Hawaii's historic step will light a match under the campaign nationally remains to be seen or not.

Karmen Hanson, program manager at the National Conference of State Legislatures, said that this initiative in Hawaii would encourage other states to raise their legal smoking age.

As per the data, around 90 percent of people who smoke in Hawaii begin out earlier than they attain the age of 21 and almost 1,400 people in Hawaii have been killed due to Tobacco use.
