In its latest transparency report, the United States' National Security Agency (NSA) has revealed that it has collected thrice the amount of metadata in 2017 as compared to the year before.

The NSA collected over 530 million call records last year. In comparison, it had collected 151 million call records in 2016.

While the overall call record collection jumped, the number of invasive orders dropped by nearly half to 33, TechCrunch reports.

Call detail records from service providers, which includes information on things such as which numbers were called, when, and for how long the call happened, and so on, also witnessed a significant increase. The numbers jumped from 151 million to 534 million. However, the number of targets decreased from 42 to 40.
