Expressing happiness over the National Students Union of India's (NSUI) win in the Delhi University Students Union (DUSU) elections, the Congress Party on Thursday said the victory indicates that people are not ready to get misguided by the Modi government anymore.

The Congress-backed NSUI on Wednesday won the Delhi student union election giving a major blow to RSS-backed Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP).

Speaking to ANI, Congress leader Mani Shankar Aiyar said that NSUI's victory in DUSU elections is an indication of 2019 Lok Sabha elections results.

"We can clearly see the results of upcoming 2019 elections. This clearly indicates that people are not ready to get misguided anymore. They have now understood Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his government. The public have rejected the Modi government. We don't have any fear when the young generation is with us," Aiyar said.

The NSUI made a comeback in the Delhi University Students Union, bagging two of the four crucial DUSU posts including that of the President and Vice-president in the elections which were held on September 12.

Akhil Bhartiya Vidyarthi Parishad, which has a stronghold in DUSU, bagged two seats, that of the Joint Secretary and the General Secretary.

A total of 43 per cent voter turnout was recorded in the DUSU elections held on Wednesday. Last year, the ABVP bagged three posts while the NSUI won the post of Joint Secretary.

Following the results, Congress president Sonia Gandhi met winning candidates from NSUI outside her residence. The NSUI also held a victory rally at North Campus of varsity.

Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi also hailed the Congress ideology and congratulated the union on Twitter.

"Congratulations @nsui on a stellar performance & Pres win in DUSU! Thank students of DU for reposing faith in Congress ideology," he tweeted.

Congress leaders Shashi Tharoor and Randeep Surjewala also hailed the NSUI victory as "a triumph of liberal values and wake-up call for Prime Minister Narendra Modi".

Following the results, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) said it does not see the defeat on two posts in DUSU election as an indicator of party's popularity graph.
