The Trinamool Congress (TMC) on Sunday said termed as 'barbaric' the gang-rape of a 72-year-old nun in West Bengal and said the perpetrators of the crime will be brought down to book.
"It was very saddening when I got the news yesterday. It was barbaric. The CID probe was initiated by 11 o'clock. I can already share that seven to eight people have been detained. All of India should be ashamed of this incident," said TMC spokesperson Derek O'Brien.
"Those who have committed this dastardly crime will be brought down to book. It doesn't matter where the incidents takes place, they should not happen at all," he added.
Two people have been detained in connection with the case after police officials released CCTV footage of four dacoits accused of raping the elderly nun.
The Delhi Catholic Archdiocese had yesterday strongly condemned the incident, saying it was shameful as the victim was a religious person who had consecrated her life to god.
The nun was allegedly gang-raped in Ranaghat area of West Bengal's Nadia district on Saturday when around a dozen dacoits entered the Convent of Jesus and Mary.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has condemned the incident and ordered a CID investigation into the matter.
