NYC terror attack: Bangladeshi suspect charged

Bangladeshi national Akayed Ullah who was arrested in connection with the terror attack near Times Square in New York has been charged with three offences.

The New York City Police Department posted on Twitter the following offences the suspect has been charged with- criminal possession of a weapon, support act of terrorism, and making terroristic threat.

The explosion took place on Monday around 7:20 am, in an underground tunnel linking the Port Authority Bus Terminal to Times Square. The underground tunnel is a major thoroughfare for workers during the morning rush hour.

The 27-year-old Ullah was carrying a suspected pipe bomb that malfunctioned and exploded prematurely, leaving him and three others injured. Ullah is currently undergoing treatment in a hospital.

 

The authorities termed it a planned terror attack.

The incident happened just days after President Donald Trump sparked demonstrations across the world by recognizing Jerusalem as Israel's capital city

It is notable that one of the largest demonstrations took place in Muslim-majority Bangladesh.
