An Indian-origin director has been indicted in the United States for allegedly making illegal contributions to a 2012 Senate campaign.

The U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York announced that 'Obama's America' director Dinesh D'Souza was indicted for making illegal contributions...

The indictment was filed by U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara and FBI Assistant Director-in-Charge George Venizelos accused D'Souza of directing 20,000 dollars in campaign contributions to a 2012 Senate candidate.

The move was in contradiction with the Election Act, which limits both primary and general election campaign contributions to 2,500 dollars each from an individual to any one candidate, the Washington Times reports.

According to the report, Venizelos said that D'Souza tried to influence elections through bogus campaign contributions, which was a serious crime.

D'Souza, 52, faces seven years behind bars if found guilty. He is scheduled to be arraigned in Manhattan on Friday.
