US President Barack Obama has nominated Caroline Kennedy, the daughter of former President John F Kennedy, to be America's ambassador to Japan.

The BBC reports that she is the only surviving child of the assassinated president and former First Lady Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy.

According to the report, Caroline was a key Obama supporter in 2008 and 2012 elections but has largely shunned political life.

Meanwhile, she has been serving as the president of the Kennedy Library Foundation.
