Brooklyn federal prosecutor Loretta Lynch has been nominated as the replacement of outgoing Attorney General Eric Holder by US President Barack Obama.
According to New York Daily News, Obama, just hours after hedging on his pick, declared he would go with Lynch to follow Holder as the nation's No. 1 prosecutor.
If the Senate approves the president's choice, Lynch will become the nation's first black female attorney and also the second female attorney general, following Janet Reno.
Lauding the decision to nominate Lynch, New York City Mayor de Blasio said that the nation was about to meet Loretta Lynch for the first time, adding that she was already known for her character, toughness and uncompromising sense of justice in the five boroughs.
The Brooklyn federal prosecutor was reportedly appointed by Obama to her current job atop the Eastern District in May 2010.
