United States President Barack Obama has warned that Africa's progress will be hindered if the leaders of the country do not step down when their terms end.

According to the BBC, he also urged for an end to the corruption issues, saying that it takes the money away from development.

Obama further said that African leaders should respect their constitutions, and step down when their term ends.

Obama made the comments in the first ever address by a US leader to the 54-member African Union at its headquarters in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa.

The speech marked the end of Obama's five day trip to Africa.
