West Bengal Director General of Police GMP Reddy on Thursday confirmed the arrest of one person in connection with the gang-rape of an elderly nun in the state earlier this month.
"One person has been arrested...... The CID will give details of this case," he said.
Earlier in the day, the suspect in the case was arrested by the state's Crime Investigation Department (CID) in Mumbai.
This is the first arrest in the case, although nine people have been detained by the police so far.
The National Commission for Women (NCW) had earlier on Monday condemned the West Bengal Government for the delay in nabbing the culprits even after a week of the incident.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had last week decided to entrust the investigation of the case to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
