One person was killed and four injured after police opened fire in Assam's Morigaon District on Tuesday to end a clash between two groups over fishing rights in a leased out natural water body.

Morigaon's Superintendent of Police Ain-ul-Haque said: "At around 10.30 a.m., nearly 5,000 people gathered at Tetelia Kordoi Beel and tried to forcibly catch fish there. When the employees of the lessee of the water body tried to prevent them from fishing, the two sides clashed. They continued to attack each other even after police resorted to baton-charge and fired rubber bullets. To control the situation, police fired five rounds of live bullets. Additional security men have been posted in the area and the situation is now under control."

The deceased has been identified as Biswajeet Borodoloi. He died on the spot.

The injured are being treated in a local hospital.

Police has imposed prohibitory orders under Section 144 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) in the area.
