Heavily armed Maoist rebels attacked a coalfield office killing one and injuring several others in Latehar district of Jharkhand.

The incident took place between 9.00 a.m and 10.00 a.m as the rebels attacked everyone that was present at the office of Central Coalfields Limited (CCL), a subsidiary of Coal India Limited (CIL).

The rebels also destroyed chairs, computers as well as the documents of the office.

"The Maoists fired around 10 rounds and beat up workers of Central Coalfields Limited (CCL). During the firing, a driver got hit; he was taken to the hospital but died during treatment," said Station House Officer, Ajay Kumar.

He added that investigations are underway to find the people behind the attack.

The workers who were beaten up by the rebels don't know the cause behind the attack. The faces of the armed attackers were covered and hence they could not be identified.

"Around 10 to 12 people suddenly attacked us. They were heavily armed. Everybody started running to save themselves and so did I," added a worker, Nandan.
