Congress leader Rashid Alvi today said that while it was a good thing that Communal Violence Bill was being discussed in the Parliament today, only a discussion wouldn't suffice as laws are needed to tackle communal violence.

Alvi told ANI, "There definitely needs to be a discussion on communal violence in the Parliament. But I would add that only discussions are not sufficient on the Communal Violence Bill, laws are also needed. The country wants peace. If communal violence spreads in the country, then there would be no peace. Our respect in the world would diminish."

"Strict laws are required. When we wanted to make strict laws in our term, the BJP used to oppose it," he added.

The Congress party has given an adjournment notice in Lok Sabha to discuss communal violence and Sonia Gandhi also addressed a Congress Parliamentary Party (CPP) meet held today.

According to sources, Congress president Sonia Gandhi said in the CPP meet today that communal tensions have increased under new Government.

She also reportedly told the party that they will have to work together, forgetting internal differences and would have to work hard to get the party back to power in the CPP meet today.
