A recent survey has revealed that only one out of five people are aware that William Shakespeare wrote Hamlet.

The poll has found that one in nine Brits has not read a book in the past one year, Metro.co.uk reported.

James Endersby, managing director of Opinium Research, which conducted the poll, said that for many people reading has become a luxury and something they cannot commit a great deal of time to.

Reasons for failing to take classic literature beyond the school gates include lack of time and preferring to watch film versions of books.

When we do pick up a book, one in ten men and one out of 30 women reads while on the loo.

Nearly half of us do it just before we go to sleep.
