Opposition leaders have said that President Barack Obama's invitation to Prime Minister Narendra Modi should be only seen as a regular diplomatic issue.

Nawab Malik of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) told ANI, "Prime Ministers of countries get invitation from other countries. It is a diplomatic issue. He (Modi) got an invitation as a Prime Minister and not as Modi."

Congress leader Rashid Alvi told ANI, "Narendra Modi has always wished to go to America, and now, he would be able to go there. Obama's invitation is for the Prime Minister of the country. That's why he has been invited."

"Modi must be gratified after Obama's invitation. We don't like Obama's policies, but Modi must be gratified," Janata Dal United's Ali Anwar told ANI,

U.S. Deputy Secretary of State William Burns had called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi yesterday and invited him to visit USA through a letter sent by U.S. President Barack Obama.

The Prime Minister thanked President Obama for the invitation and looked forward to a result-oriented visit with concrete outcomes that imparts new momentum and energy to India-U.S. strategic partnership, a PMO statement said.
