Josh Singer and Tom McCarthy took home the best original screenplay award for 'Spotlight' at the 88th Annual Academy Awards, marking the night's first award-grabbing.

This is the first Oscar for Singer and McCarthy, the latter of whom is also nominated for best director.

The movie, which is up for six awards, is about the Boston Globe team of investigative reporters, who uncovered sexual abuse in the Catholic church and McCarthy dedicated the award to the survivors.

Best Adapted Screenplay went to Charles Randolph and Adam McKay for 'The Big Short,' marking their first Oscar.

McKay, who is also nominated for director, thanked Michael Lewis for writing an amazing book and the studio for taking a risk for a movie that's about financial esoteric and also advised everyone not to vote for candidates that take money from "weirdo billionaires.
