Over 550 dancers achieved a record for Kerala after performing the traditional Pinnal Thiruvathirakali dance on one platform, leaving the audience mesmerised.

Around 544 women and eight men entered the India Book of Records and Asia Book of Records after performing this traditional form of singing and dancing.

Women dressed in traditional attire of white sari with golden border, called 'settum mundum' and men clad in kurta and lungi performed for more than an hour in Kochi.

As a part of the dance, women weaved colourful threads into knots and then unfastened them as they continued to perform by clapping and dancing in tune with the vocal music.

An official from Asia Book of Records confirmed the record.

"Total 552 participants performed Pinnal Thiruvathirakali in which there were 68 groups of women, comprising 544 females and one men's group of eight participants. They have entered the India Book of Records and Asia Book of Records," said Manohar Rawat from Asia Book of Records.

Women aged between 15 and 75 participated in the dance show which was organised and choreographed by 78-year-old Malathy G. Menon, who was felicitated by the officials for presenting a beautiful show.

Menon has already entered the Limca Book of Records, a record book of Indian origin, for getting more than 3,000 women perform the traditional dance form in 2013.

Traditionally, Pinnal Thiruvathirakali is a women-oriented dance form. In the earlier days, it was performed by women to attain everlasting marital bliss.
