Australia's much-vaunted pace attack had to sit up straight and take notice of England's prowess with the swing and seam bowling at the first day of the first Test against New Zealand at Lord's.

Although captain Michael Clarke does not want his team losing focus and getting too engaged in England's series with New Zealand, but Stuart Broad's ominous second-innings spell in the first Test against the Black Caps might have left a few of Clarke's top order allies shaking in their boots, the Sydney Morning Herald reports.

According to left-arm quick Mitchell Starc, he had taken notes from that match, adding that despite England's big win, also recognised some chinks in the old enemy's armour ahead of the Ashes.

Hoping to see New Zealand win in the second Test, Starc said that they were encouraged by the way England struggled against Kiwi left-arm bowlers Neil Wagner and Trent Boult, adding that successful seam bowling at Lord's relied on one thing - length.
